Hobro - Home of the Vikings

Hobro is the largest town in Mariagerfjord and is a town with plenty of life, trade, culture and family experiences - including Viking Museum Fyrkat.

Deep in Mariager Fjord lies Hobro, one of North Jutland's oldest market towns. Hobro is the municipality's largest city, and a city with lots of life, trade and culture. Hobro is best known for the unique Vikingeborg Fyrkat, which was built a thousand years ago a few kilometers west of the current Hobro. In September 2023, Vikingeborg Fyrkat was admitted to UNESCO's World Heritage List, for its importance as the center of Viking society's political and social life. Here is also the Vikingecenter Fyrkat, a reconstructed Viking village with lots of activities - mainly during the school holidays.

In the center of Hobro you will find an exciting pedestrian street with lots of shops, as well as a wide range of different forms of entertainment on offer all year round. In the center of Hobro is also the old brewery, Bee's farm, where the minibrewery Bies Brewery in recent times has been resurrected in what was once the brewery's old stables. The Art Gallery is also located here, which has changing exhibitions all year round. 

New and old meet at the harbour. The area is a mixture of history, atmosphere and culture. The old warehouses and historic buildings on the south quay today house cafes, theatres, museums and galleries, while the north quay is still visited by fascinating cargo ships from the wider world.

Sydkajen is also the port of call for the tour boat Swan, which sails through the fjord thin throughout the summer and docks in both Bramslev Bakker and Mariager. On The pleasure craft museum you can see the ships that formerly belonged to the fjord, and further along the harbor lie Maritime Culture Center Mariagerfjord, which offers unique experiences into the maritime world, where wooden ships and their restoration are the focus. 

Hobro has a multitude of places to eat and all kinds of accommodation. The campsite and hostel are within walking distance of the city center and Hotel Amerika is located in the scenic Hobro Østerskov. 

The area around Hobro offers many attractions and excursion opportunities, both on foot, by bike and by car, e.g. The World Map in Klejtrup, Bramslev Bakker, Mariager-Handest Veteran Railway, Rold Forest, Circus Museum etc.
