The Fyrkatstien is a beautiful nature route that connects Hobro Center with Viking Museum Fyrkat

On the route you can experience a fantastic natural area with lakes, streams, fauna and a rich animal life.

The path starts in the pedestrian street i Hobro, at Store Torv. From here it goes past the Hobro Theater, towards Ambupladsen, which lies by the beautiful Vesterfjord.

Vesterfjord in Hobro is a shallow brackish water lake that is somewhere between salt and fresh water. Vesterfjord was originally the innermost part of Mariager Fjord, but today is only connected to Mariager Fjord via Onsild Å, which runs through Hobro and which continues on to Fyrkat.

From the north there is access to Vesterfjord from Hodals Bæk.

Follow in the footsteps of the Vikings

In the Viking Age, Mariager Fjord stretched all the way to Fyrkat. The Fyrkat path therefore follows the Vikings' old waterway into the castle.

From Ambuparken, the tour therefore continues along the path out to Aalykkevej and up along the road to the allotment houses, which have the most beautiful view over Fyrkat Engsø.

Onsild Ådal and Fyrkat Engsø

Fyrkat Engsø is a natural area close to the city that was recreated in 2009. The purpose of the project and the restoration of the meadow lake was to clean the water from Onsild Å of nutrients. In addition, the lake will contribute to a richer and more varied nature in the river valley, with a rich wildlife that, among other things, including otters, kingfishers, grebes, herons and many other bird species.

On Fyrkatstien you get it all. On the way out towards Viking Museum Fyrkat you can enjoy Fyrkat Engsø on one side of the path and Onsild Å on the other side, which stretches beautifully through the landscape. You can choose to turn off and visit Stormandens gård at Viking Museum Fyrkat or continue and explore Harald Blåtand's old ring castle, Fyrkatborgen.

The entire trail is signposted, so it's easy to follow the Fyrkatstien, whether you're going one way or the other.

Hærvejen and the Mariagerfjord route

For a round trip, the Fyrkatstien can be combined with a nice bike ride in the area. Fyrkatstien connects boats with The army road og Mariagerfjord route Route 32. Both routes run past Fyrkat.
