A scenic and urban walking route in and around Mariager on a 5 km marked route. The route takes you to Hohøj, Alstrup Krat and Maren Finds Dal, among others.

The Hohøj route takes you past prehistoric sites, where you both enter Mariager's idyllic town center with cobbled streets and half-timbered houses, as well as out into nature through Maren Finds Dalen, Alstrup Krat and up to Hohøj - Scandinavia's largest Bronze Age mound

Along the way, the route is marked with signs where a red arrow on a green background is marked. In the city, however, it is a red arrow on a white background that you must keep an eye on.

A hiking route with history, culture and nature at the fore

Where you start is up to you. The walking route goes in a loop, so you finish where you started the trip.

You can, for example, start down in Mariager by at Løvebrønden, which is on Østergade, and head up the path behind the pharmacy. Here you reach Maren Finds Dal, where, despite its dense forest, you can still see the slopes that were formed by the ice age's meltwater. Here the trip continues up to High pitch, which is known to be Denmark's largest and highest Bronze Age mound. Although it may well be a tough trip uphill, it is worth the whole trip when you see the view from the top of Hohøj.

Car shelter from the Second World War

Before you reach Hohøj, on Hohøj Skovvej you can find remains of the occupying power's wagon shelter from the Second World War. During the war, Hohøj was used as an observation and listening post by the German troops and on the way up there you can see "notches" in the slopes - these are the places where the occupying power's wagon shelters were dug in.

Alstrup Krat and Oksedalen

From Hohøj you move into the forest and over to Alstrup Krat. Here you can experience a noisy silence, where the moss covers the forest floor and majestic conifers shoot high into the sky. Try to stand still and listen when you enter the forest. It's completely quiet. Then look up and see how the conifers blow in the wind. It is a distinctive nature experience.

Alstrup Krat continues into what is called Oskedal. Like Maren Finds Dalen, Oksedalen was formed during the Ice Age, as a result of erosion from the meltwater.

Soon you end up on Fjordgade, where you can see Denmark's most beautiful fjord Mariager Fjord over on the other side of the road. Take any detour over to the newly constructed Mariager Strand and dip your toes in the beautiful fjord.

You are now nearing the end of the road, but before then, the trip goes through Østergade, which with its fine half-timbered houses with many beautiful doors and hollyhocks along the house walls, is worth a look.

Alternative route start

You can also choose to start at Hohøj and find information about the area you are going to, in the small nearby red house close to the Bronze Age mound. Then you are well dressed for a trip in the footsteps of history.
