Go on a walking holiday in Mariager. Here are two wonderful walking routes that take you past nature-rich areas combined with historical sights.

You can choose to follow this route "Mariager Rundt", which, as the name suggests, takes you around the city, but also into the old, beautiful streets. The route is approx. 11 km.

You can also make do with the short route, which is approx. 5 km. You can read more about the short route here

Mariager Walking Route - 11 km

Where you start is entirely up to you. The walking route goes in a loop, so you finish where you started the trip.

The route takes you past prehistoric sites, where you both enter Mariager's idyllic town center with cobbled streets and half-timbered houses, as well as out into nature through, among other things, Vesterskov, Munkholm Plant, Alstrup Krat and up to Hohøj - Scandinavia's largest Bronze Age mound

A hiking route with history, culture and nature at the fore

If you start at Mariager Havn, you can continue along the coast towards Færgehagen - which, by the way, is an obvious place to take a dip in the hot summer months. From here, the tour continues along Vesterskov, where there is a small detour up to Sukkertoppen (over the veteran railway tracks - be aware of moving trains, however), from where you can enjoy a fantastic view over Mariager Fjord.

Through Vesterskov, the trip goes up Asserdal towards Himmelkol and then you hit The rose garden, where 400 different rose varieties spread over approx. 800 is to be found. Enjoy both the sight and, not least, the scent of the many beautiful roses before you move further inside Munkholm Plant. In Munkholm Anlagget you can enjoy nature, the lakes, fountains and a nice little pavilion and the Eremithytten. The area hides a lot of history from a bygone era. You can read more about all of this Here!

Something else Munkholm Anlagget hides is a welcome troll, who is not so easy to find, however. Can you find him? It is a troll Ivan Evigvår created by Artist Thomas Dambo.

Pssst... He lives close to a small white half-timbered house with a red door and thatched roof. See if you can find him via the troll map Here!

From Munkholm Anlagget, the tour continues up to Hohøj - Scandinavia's largest Bronze Age mound.

Alstrup Krat and Oxendalen

From Hohøj you move into the forest and over to Alstrup Krat. Here you can experience a noisy silence, where the moss covers the forest floor and majestic conifers shoot high into the sky. Try to stand still and listen when you enter the forest. It's completely quiet. Then look up and see how the conifers blow in the wind. It is a distinctive nature experience.

Alstrup Krat continues into what is called Oskendalen - an area that was formed during the ice age, as a result of the erosion from the meltwater.

The Oksendalen got its name because the farmers who lived up at Hohøj in both the Bronze and Iron Ages dragged their cattle down through this valley to the meadows by the fjord. When you stand in the beautiful valley between the tall trees, you can try to imagine the ancient times when a little boy/girl drove the cows down through the valley one spring morning, while the sun rose over the fjord.

After the trip through Oksendalen you end up on Fjordgade, where you can see Denmark's most beautiful fjord Mariager Fjord over on the other side of the road. Take any a detour over to the newly constructed one Mariager Strand and dip your toes in the beautiful fjord.

You are now nearing the end of the road, but before then, the trip goes through Østergade, which with its fine half-timbered houses with many beautiful doors and hollyhocks along the house walls, is worth a look.

Alternative route start

You can also choose to start at Hohøj and find information about the area you are going to, in the small nearby red house close to the Bronze Age mound. Then you are well dressed for a trip in the footsteps of history.
