Fyrkat Engsø and Onsild Ådal are fantastic natural areas close to Hobro town. Here there is a rich animal life, lakes, streams, fauna and a sea of different bird species.

The newly established heart path takes you around nature, along both footpaths and dirt roads.

From the parking lot at Vikingeborgen Fyrkat (Fyrkatvej 45) you walk along the dirt road (Thostrup Hovgårdsvej) all the way to the railway viaduct on the opposite side of Engsøen. Below the viaduct, you continue along the dirt road (still Thostrup Hovgårdsvej), which you follow until Aalykkevej, where you turn right in the direction of the city.

After approx. After 50 metres, turn right again along the gravel road up through a small forest area, where by following the arrows you reach an allotment garden area. This is passed and the path arrows now point down towards the path that leads over to the path at Onsild Å. From here, follow the path along the stream back to Vikingeborgen Fyrkat.

The posted arrows also show how to go the opposite way around Fyrkat Engsø.

Fyrkat Engsø

Fyrkat Engsø is a near-urban nature area in Onsild Ådal between the town of Hobro and the Viking fortress Fyrkat.

It was recreated in 2009 as part of a project to clean the water from Onsild Å of nutrients by letting part of the water flow through the lake. At the same time, the lake project should provide a richer and more natural environment in the river valley.

Follow in the footsteps of the Vikings

It is also here that you will find another lovely nature trail - the Fyrkatstien, which connects Viking Museum Fyrkat with Hobro .

In the Viking Age, Mariager Fjord stretched all the way to Fyrkat. The Fyrkat path therefore follows the Vikings' old waterway into the castle.

On Fyrkatstien you get it all. There are also signs set up here, so you can follow the route that also leads you up to Stormandens gård on Viking Museum Fyrkat.

Hærvejen and the Mariagerfjord route

For a round trip, the hiking routes can be combined with a nice bike ride in the area. Fyrkatstien connects boats with The army road og Mariagerfjord route Route 32. Both routes run past Fyrkat.
