'Thore erected this stone after his fellow Charles the Good, a very virtuous boy'
A number of things indicate that Thore and Karl were Swedish Vikings who visited the area around Hobro around the year 1000.
At Ås in Västergötland, a similar runestone with an almost identical inscription has been found, and since such an agreement can hardly be accidental, one can imagine that Thore and Karl participated in a battle around here, in which Karl fell.
Thore then raises this stone for his 'fellow' and then returns to Västergötland, where he raises another memorial stone.
That the stone traveler originates from the Swedish area is also confirmed by the fact that the runes on the Hobro stone have distinctive features that are otherwise seen on inscriptions in Västergötland.
The Hobro stone was certainly in Hobro Cemetery in 1627, but written sources state that it was moved there as early as 1368 in connection with the construction of the church.
After the construction of the current church, the Hobro stone was for a time placed in the church's porch before in 1925 it was given its current location at the Hobro Library.
